Blood pressure refers to the measurement of the amount of force that is applied to artery walls as blood is pumped throughout the body by the heart. The amount of pressure present is determined by measuring the force and the amount of blood that is pumped, as well as the size and flexibility of the arteries.
Blood pressure is described using 2 numbers, e.g. 120 over 80. The first number refers to the systolic pressure (the amount of pressure exerted during a heartbeat) and the second describes the diastolic reading (blood pressure in between heartbeats, when the heart is resting and refilling with blood).
Blood pressure testing is useful because high blood pressure (hypertension) usually exhibits no symptoms but increases the risk of heart attacks and heart failure, stroke and kidney failure. If you haven’t done so yet this year, come to Crestwood Pharmacy Ltd. for free blood pressure testing in Medicine Hat.
